Lil Twist Speaks To Karmaloop About His Debut Album & More

Karmaloop chopped it up with Lil Twist before his show in Boston, Massachusetts on March 1st. They talked about the XXL Magazine Freshman cover, Twizzy‘s forthcoming Don’t Get It Twisted album, his relationship with YMCMB label-mates, features on the album, and more. You can read the interview after the jump!

Does anyone still believe we are going to get Twist‘s debut album in 8 days ❓

Karmaloop: I saw you were rocking Dope Couture on your Sway in the Morning interview; I love that brand! Are you a huge fan as well?
Lil Twist: Yeah I have a homie that works there – I was out at their store on Fairfax in Los Angeles!

You were an XXL Freshman last year, what did you think about the current line-up?
I like a few artists they picked and the cover was pretty cool too!

Who was your favorite that made the cut?
My favorite would have to be Future.

What did you take from the Freshman experience?
It was definitely dope to go through the whole experience and be selected as one of the Freshman… I met different people and that’s helped me for potential collabs.

Do you feel it helped you reach a next level of success?
As far as taking me to the next level, I am sure it helped, but my label and my brother Lil Wayne… they already had that mapped out.

Your debut album, Don’t Get It Twisted, drops March 20th – how was your creative process different on this than any other project?
It was very different when I went into the studio for this album. I went in the studio like “these records are for this album.” I was really focused on every song. For example, I can go about a mixtape song like a mixtape song, you gotta know what it is.

How do you go about choosing the features on the album?
I chose my features from being creative and thinking about who would sound great on this record. I got mad features – Busta Rhymes, Justin Bieber, 2 Chainz, Chris Brown, and of course Lil Wayne – it’s gonna be a great album.

Do you feel like you have a potential number 1 hit?
I really make singles as far as my album goes. Every song on my album could be a possible single. And that’s how I go about it in the studio, when I go about it. What the waves gonna hear and what the people are gonna love.

Besides Lil Wayne, have you built relationships with the rest of the YMCMB roster?
I’m very close to Mack Maine besides Wayne because those two guys are really like my brothers. Also, I would have to say Drake and my manager, Cortez Bryant, he’s a father figure for me.

What is the greatest lesson you have learned from them?
They have taught me everything from how to go about life, how to go about the music industry, what to do, what not to do and how to carry myself… basically everything!

Anything else you would like to add?
Don’t Get It Twisted, March 20th, that’s my main focus right now – I can’t wait for you guys to hear the album!

I agree, no tracklist or cover. Its not coming on the 20th. All bands would have a leaked album cover and tracklist by now. Don’t forget that Young Money is notrious for setting dates and not keeping them. Carter 3, 4, Take Care, Careless World were all delayed. The Limp Bizkit X Lil Wayne song hasn’t even dropped yet and they said next week. There is no way Young Money will release 16 albums this year.
