Christina Milian Talks 4U EP, Motherhood, Relationships, Balancing Her Work & More

Christina Milian recently chopped it up with VIBE‘s Vixen Chat for an interview about her upcoming music, motherhood, relationships, and television.

During their conversation, Tina Turn Up also spoke on her 4U EP that will be released on Friday, balancing all of her work, her creative process, season 2 of her “Christina Milian Turned Up” reality TV show, and more.

VIBE Vixen: From singing/songwriting to holding down several TV gigs to being a mother, you embody the idea of a hyphenated professional. What’s you secret to balancing it all?
Christina Milian: It’s a lot of work. Luckily for me, I have a nanny and my mom and my sisters and a lot of people who help. It’s a lot of juggling many different hats. Sometimes I have an early call time in the morning for filming so I have to get Violet dressed early, bring her to my sister’s house or my sisters come early and help her get dressed for school. It’s hard work, but the work I’m putting in for my career is for her. I try to balance have the work and family by bringing her to work with me when I can. My creative process is at an all time high right now but just as a mom, if I’m not working I really just want to be around her. I get that guilt like everything you do is not even enough. You know, you want to do even more for your kid. She’s such a special kid and all I got.

You mentioned that your creative process is at an all time high, what all does that entail?
It’s all about putting your mind to something and making it happen — it’s like tenfold. You see it, you hear it, you dream it, you see it come to fruition. As a creative I’m really hands-on. I don’t just sing and write songs; I come up with visuals and ideas, too. I’ve always been a creative kid; I’ve always had a big imagination from birth so I was able to turn that into creativity. Even for me as a designer now with my clothing line, We Are Pop Culture, it’s just a natural thing that comes to me.

So, what’s next for you in terms of music?
I have a four-track EP titled 4U coming out Dec. 4. It’s about womanhood and the relationship I was in this past year. Technically, the guy I was dating, this project was for him. But at the end of the day, I put a pretty little package together for my fans and made it all about them.

There are also four accompanying music videos too, all shot and ready to go. It’s been a long time coming, especially being an independent artist, but it’s been exciting because each song has gotten the proper amount of love and each video means something to me. This way it tells a story and it’s the real me. Music is about vulnerability and realness and relationships, and people being able to relate to something. And that’s exactly what I did, put everything I was going through on wax.

Is there a message you hope fans take away from 4U as far as relationships and vulnerability?
The message for them is: love hard, be strong, have fun. You know, don’t be afraid to get hurt. I do believe in karma and I do believe in love. It’s okay to get hurt, it makes you stronger and better. It’s not the end of the world if you get hurt because you can always keep moving forward. Live your love life for yourself. Do what makes you happy, whether it’s riding til the wheels fall off or whatever the case is. Love is a beautiful thing. But when it all ends, it’s really about confidence.

You just celebrated the season two premiere of Christina Milian Turned Up earlier this month. What are you most excited for people to see this season?
What I’m most excited for people to see in season two is my grind, especially when it comes to my music. This season definitely shows us in our different lanes and doing things independently. There’s a lot of emotional ups and downs, too. You’ll see the process of my new project; things my sisters are going through like pregnancy and boyfriend drama; me going through my relationship issues. But what I love most is that beyond the craziness, we always come together as a family. It’s a good season filled with triumph, vulnerability, everything.
