“[This is] giving me a chance to come home,” Drake told MTV News about his injury. “With the series of events that have happened since I’ve been home, I’ve finally got my first place in Toronto by myself, which has been an amazing experience. I’ve gotten to see a lot of friends. We did that Toronto show. We had an amazing night — me, [Young] Jeezy and Trey [Songz] and everybody at a restaurant.

“That and the music I started making,” he continued. “I finally made peace with my city. And that was important for me to start this album, because I didn’t feel peace here. I was starting to come home and feel like everybody was staring at me weird. I was starting to feel a little paranoid. A couple things will happen, people will try to check on you. And you just get to the point where it’s like, ‘I don’t feel comfortable at home.’ That’s a bad thing, especially when Toronto inspires so much of the music that I make.”

While he’s been in Toronto, Drake also worked on the video for “Successful,” featuring Lil Wayne and Trey Songz. While on the set, Jamie Foxx stopped by and talked to the upstart MC about his injury, pleading with him to take it easy. Drake said he’s gotten text messages from LeBron James and Chris Paul echoing the sentiment. “[They] told me, ‘This is serious what you’re dealing with, a sports injury,’ ” Drake explained. “Everyone is telling me cool out.”

Video: Drake Sets Date For Knee Surgery

He took to Twitter on Sunday (August 16) and sent word that he’ll be undergoing surgery on his knee — which suffered three torn ligaments — on September 8.

“In the studio … working on Thank Me Later … magic … surgery September 8th,” he wrote. “Then we’re back in business.”

Drake spoke to MTV News recently about his second injury, which he said rivaled the pain of his initial mishap. In June the rapper tore his ACL, MCL and LCL while playing basketball. He was set to join Wayne, Young Jeezy and Soulja Boy Tell’em as one of the America’s Most Wanted headliners. After his injury, though, he shortened his set from a full production to a reduced medley of hits during Wayne’s time. But excitement got the best of Drake when he ran across the stage at Camden’s Susquehanna Bank Center during his performance of “Best I Ever Had.”

“The stride that I had, I planted with my right and I had a brace on,” he recalled of the moment. “I would say it was borderline more painful than the initial tear. It was bad. It buckled, popped. I was down. I remember slapping the ground. I couldn’t believe it. I saw the lights coming down. [And I was thinking] ‘Did I just fall?’ I was in so much pain then that I didn’t care at the time. They actually cut a nice pair of jeans that I had, all the way up. Bad. But it’s all part of my story. I feel like maybe it needed to happen. I came out on that tour for one reason and one reason only — I didn’t show up for the money or the fact that I even needed it right now. I showed up there for the fans that genuinely saw me on the tour [bill] and said, ‘That’s why I’m going.’ “

Drake posts a letter to his fans from himself at his OctobersVeryOwn blog:

This bottle of Opus One is low but my spirits are high my friends. I am about 2 hours away from Toronto, CA where I will be spending the next chunk of time recovering from a surgery that I now must have. I embarked on this tour with a torn ACL, MCL, and LCL and due to the events that happened the other night lord only knows what other damage I have done. On the bright side I will begin the reflecting and soul searching that its going to take to make this album and my outfit on the night I fell was crack. I will forever push myself beyond the limits despite advice and recommendations given because even with this new found success I am still the kid who wanted this more than anything in the world. Its funny when I read comments from previous fans who have lost interest because of the radio play and exposure I have. I just want to assure anyone reading that nothing has changed on my end. I refuse to get comfortable, I refuse to fall in line and follow anyone elses formulas. I still work as if So Far Gone had never dropped and I’m still trying to figure out how I’m going to gain entry to this game.

Will Drake return to Young Money Presents: The America’s Most Wanted Music Festival?

The Lil Wayne protégé took a nasty spill onstage in Camden, New Jersey, on Friday night and had to be carried off. On Saturday night, the tour — which is headlined by Lil Wayne and features Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy Tell’em, Jeremih, Pleasure P and the Young Money family — rolled into the Nikon Theater.

Usually, Drake would lead off the Young Money musical parade, which takes place during Weezy’s set. Instead, Jae Millz led off, followed by Lil Twist, Lil Chuckee, T-Streets, Tyga, Gudda Gudda and Nicki Minaj.

Wayne then announced that Drake would not be performing.

“I must let you know, we had a technical difficulty yesterday,” Wayne said of Drake’s status. “The nigga fell.”

Weezy went on to say Drake injured yet another ligament in his leg. “He goes in surgery tomorrow,” Wayne said. “This is for my nigga Drake.”

Wayne also asked the audience to pray for his friend. Organizers for the tour have not put out a statement yet about Drake’s tour status, but Drizzy did tweet Miss Info after the fall: “All is well … On the bus laying down … Getting surgery this week but I’m walking. Thank my whole YM family for the help. Lion Hearts!”

Last Sunday, on the eve of the tour’s launch, Drake told MTV News he would be performing despite a torn ACL and a prognosis from the doctors that he may not walk again should he reinjure himself too severely.

Drake Won’t Let Injury Keep Him Off America’s Most Wanted Stage

No matter what his doctor says, Drake is not missing the Young Money Presents: The America’s Most Wanted Music Festival. Despite a torn ACL, the fast-rising Canadian artist said he just couldn’t miss the outing, which also stars Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy and Jeremih.

“I didn’t really get any approval from my doctor, but I made a personal decision 48 hours ago that I’d be letting a lot of people down if I didn’t show up and at least show them I’m there for them,” Drake told MTV News on Sunday night at the Toyota Pavilion, where the tour opens on Monday (July 27). Drake took part in Lil Wayne’s rehearsal. “For the last two weeks, I’ve been really going hard, getting all types of acupuncture, trying to bring the swelling in my knee down. I’m walking around — no cane. I’ll put a brace on it tomorrow night. No one will probably even know I’m injured.”

Drake was much more mobile on Sunday than he was at the BET Awards last month, when he performed while leaning against a stool. And although his rehab is going well, Drake is still not strong enough to perform his own solo set, so he’ll come out during Lil Wayne’s set, when Weezy takes a break to let the Young Money music family perform their solo records.

“I’m not doing my own set,” Drizzy said. “That’s one thing I have to apologize to my fans about. It’s too much of a risk, if I hit that wrong turn doing 30 minutes every night. If I tear my ACL again, the doctors say I might not be able to walk again. I have to be cautious.”

Despite being a bit inhibited onstage, Drake did insist that “we’re gonna have fun.” He was especially excited about having a tour that plays a lot of outdoor venues.

“That’s the most exciting part, is that it’s a festival tour,” he said. “Every night it’s weather. I wanna see what happens when it rains, see what happens when it’s hot, when it’s cold. It’s a rush because it’s unpredictable. The music means more when you’re outside. You get that vibe. You got the people on the lawn. The natural air, the natural light, it’s a beautiful thing to be a part of.

“The set’s crazy,” Drake promised. “When I get onstage, I’mma turn it into Drake’s set. I think each artist on Young Money is gonna get a chance to shine.”
